Dreamlands

  • Category:Mythos:Locations:Dreamlands, Dreamlands
  • From other sources:
    • Carcosa (Robert W. Chambers' hallucinatory world)
    • River Yann (Dunsany's Dreamlands)
    • Inquanok (Gary Myers' Lovecraft-inspired Northern Dreamland of Inganok, renamed and connected by Chaosium to Lomar)
    • Midian (loosely-inspired by Clive Barker)
    • Kandar (From The Evil Dead)
    • Alcheringa, That portion of the Earth's Dreamlands which is linked with the aboriginal people of Australia; also known as the Dreamtime. Some say that the aboriginals originally came to the Waking World from the Alcheringa while others believe that they created it from their own dreams. Alcheringa is separated from the majority of the Dreamlands by the granite Pillars of the South. Alcheringa is so remote from the rest of Dreamlands as to be unknown save to a very few. The Captain of the White Ship, and the serpent people — known as the Arkaroo in Alcheringa—are quite possibly the only beings who are aware of the existence of this realm. It is not normally possible for non-aboriginals to enter this realm while dreaming as they would enter the normal Dreamlands. Instead such dreamers must first enter the Dreamlands via any of the usual dream gates and then journey through the Granite Pillars of the South. Investigators who are physically present in the Dreamlands may also choose to enter Alcheringa via this route. Those seeking to enter Alcheringa physically might be well advised to attempt to find one of the physical gates to Alcheringa which exist in Australia and save themselves the long, and sometimes dangerous, journey across the Dreamlands. However, locating such a gate might prove to be just as difficult as voyaging across the Dreamlands.
  • Inquanok - more (Gary Myers):
  • Khalifate of Cuppar-Nombo (Gary Myers' Dunsany-inspired Egyptian Dreamland)
  • Land of Mhor (Gary Myers)
  • Narthos (Brian Lumley's "Hero of Dreams" and "Clock of Dreams"?)
    • Theelys, Far to the west, on the southern banks of the mouth of the river Tross, stands Theelys. It marks the farthest western extent of the ancient Tyrhhian Empire. Never more than a border town, Theelys has stood inhabited since the days when Yath-Lhi's armies roamed the Dreamlands in search of loot to satisfy their queen's greed. Theelys is sometimes referred to as the City of Mists because it is almost continually shrouded in thick swirling mists which rise from the Tross. This, combined with its remote location on the very frontiers of dream, has made Theelys a somewhat rough and ready city. Few ships put into the harbor, as Theelys has no valuable commodities to export. Theelys' main feature is the fact that it is one of the locations of the Great Library of the Dreamlands. Why Theelys was chosen for this honor is a mystery, but most scholars feel that it has to do with the town’s most prominent resident, Nyrass the sorcerer, who dwells within a great castle standing at the outskirts of town. (Lumley, "Hero of Dreams"?)
    • Valley of Narthos, A valley holding the River Xari and the city of Jaren. Herds of plains-dwelling okapi can be found there. (Lumley, "Hero of Dreams"?)
    • Jaren, A small town in the valley of Narthos. It is drab and dreary, though the fields surrounding it are of surpassing beauty and its walls are of the fabulous onyx of Inquanok. (Lumley, "Hero of Dreams"?)
    • Xari River, The poisonous Xari is in the valley of Narthos, its waters jet black and deadly. (Lumley, "Hero of Dreams"?)
    • Tross River, The Tross runs several hundred miles and has its headwaters in the Great Bleak Mountains. It ends in the Southern Sea, near the city of Theelys. Little lies west of the Tross, but a ferry runs across the river to bring the farmers and wanderers back into more civilized realms, or to take wanderers and adventurers in those unknown regions which lie beyond. (Lumley, "Hero of Dreams"?)
    • Ossaran Steppes The Ossaran Steps are an arid, wind-swept region is the home of the Wazik nomads, feared plainsmen do not ride horses but instead use the shaggy yaks of the region for mounts. They lead a harsh existence and raid the few villages which dot the boundaries of their homeland, taking captives as slaves which they often sell. Their spread has been largely halted by the Great Bleak Mountains, which are all but impassable, the Great Wall which surrounds Sona-Nyl, the land of Zura from which no man has ever returned alive, and the Bnazic Desert which they regard as haunted. Their only avenue of expansion is to the west, toward Theelys. Occasionally, various bands of these plainsmen have banded together to mount large scale raiding forays in that direction, but the descendants of Soomus have always turned them back. (Lumley, "Hero of Dreams"?)
    • Valley of Tanta, ===Valley of Tanta=== To the east of Dylath-Leen is the lush, irrigated valley of Tanta. Tanta is the main source for produce and livestock near Dylath-Leen. Not far from the city, in the valley, stands the village of Ti-Penth. (Lumley, "Clock of Dreams"?)
    • Ti-Penth, ===Ti-Penth=== A small village in the Valley of Tanta, east of Dylath-Leen. Here the residents of the valley gather every year to celebrate the Festival of Plenty, marking the end of harvest season and the first trips to market. (Lumley, "Clock of Dreams"?)
