"Of Angels And Bones" revolves around the happenings of a small town in Oklahoma in the 1920s. A local man discovers a strange whistle and learns its secret at the cost of his own sanity and the lives of his friends.

Synopsis

This scenario is divided into two parts, each with its own Mythos threat.

Totum Oklahoma is a small town with an interesting past. A year ago, at Halloween time, the pastor of a small non-denominational church was unfortunately and accidentally killed. Upon his death, townfolk were initially outraged, but when they discovered dead bodies in the church's basement they quickly began to wonder about the activities of the pastor. The church was boarded up and the congregation disbanded. But the true breadth of the terrible truth was never truly discovered -- namely that the pastor was in possession of a very special whistle which could be used to summon a particular Colour Out Of Space that lives in nearby Lake Roebuck.

Fast forward a year to the time of the scenario. The events of the pastor's death are nothing more than an unpleasant memory to most. But Preston Blakely, one of the church's most faithful, has been keeping the pastor's memory alive in his own unpleasant way. Having taken possession of the whistle and learning of its power to summon the 'angels' that once visited the pastor, Blakely's actions have been indirectly responsible for disappearances around town as well as strange lights being observed in the sky.

The investigators arrive in the days leading up to Halloween. Not long afterwards a scientist with specific experience with Colours Out Of Space also arrives in town, drawn by the same reports of odd occurrences. The scientist, Prescott, has with him a prototype box which he claims can contain one of the Colours if it can be trapped inside.

As Halloween approaches, Blakely becomes more confident in his abilities to control the Colour Out Of Space, and decides to use the being to resurrect the church. He calls all townsfolk to a special 'demonstration' on Union Hill, where the power of God's will will be revealed. He is actually planning to bring the Colour down on the assembled masses; something the Investigators and Prescott will jointly want to prevent. They fail -- many people are killed by the entity. But in the aftermath, one of Prescott's assistant's gains possession of the whistle from Blakely.

In an effort to deal with the menace once and for all, Prescott plans a repeat summoning on Union Hill the night before Halloween. The plan is to blow the whistle and, when the Colour appears, trap the alien creature in the prototype box. This, in fact, works ... but there is an unfortunate side-effect. Rather than merely trapping the creature, the box serves to destroy it, and in doing so an enormous amount of energy is released -- this pulse kills Prescott and all his team, as well as blowing a large hole in the side of Union Hill.

This leads into the second part of the scenario. Unfortunately, Union Hill has its own secret -- it is in fact a part of a massive stone structure created in antiquity by priests of ancient Rao. It was created as a prison for a terrible alien creature known as Rahazzut (a member of a race called the Heklung'Kuen or "Gathering of Bones"). This entity has been sleeping for millenia inside the hill ... but is still quite alive. It has no intrinsic physical form, but can create a body for itself out of the dead bones of other creatures. It can also create "spawns", animated skeletons which have independent movement. Freed from its bondage by the explosion of Prescott's box, Rahazzut is all too eager to unleash an army of these blasphemies on the unsuspecting town at the first opportunity -- the night of Halloween.
