Description
The shaft of phosphorescence from the well [brought] a sense of doom and abnormality which far outraced any image their conscious minds could form. It was no longer shining out, it was pouring out; and as the shapeless stream of unplaceable colour left the well it seemed to flow directly into the sky.

A space-born entity of alien colour, carried to earth on a meteorite in larval form, in which it descends into the water table, and infects and vampirically drains surrounding plant and animal life of natural essence until the Colour matures, and returns to the stars from whence it came. Infected plant life seems to grow to enormous size - a seeming boon for farmers when their vegetables crops seem to grow prodigiously - but the vegetables are tainted by the Colour, inedible and foul, crawling with decaying worms. Animal life tends to mutate, become susceptible to infestation with parasites which in turn are tainted by the Colour's influence. Plant and animal victims alike will crumble into dry dust after repeated night attacks by the Colour, which might be thought of as a sort of Vampire, with much the same effect and behavior as that mythical creature.
