The 1930 Salmas earthquake occurred at 22:34:26 UTC in West Azerbaijan Province, Iran. A damaging foreshock occurred fifteen hours prior to the main event and served as a warning to the villages that felt it strongly. According to varied sources, up to 3,000 fatalities may have occurred in western Iran and eastern Turkey.
