Ratings

MPAA Ratings

  • Rated: R (Violence, Profanity, Adult Content, Sex/Nudity)

Tentacle Ratings

A rough measure of how "Lovecraftian" the work is:

  • S____ (One Tentacle: Debateably Lovecraftian; has almost no direct connection to Lovecraft's work)

Not exactly a "Lovecraftian" film in the sense of being based on any of Lovecraft's work or containing references to his creations, though some viewers may find the location and atmosphere suggestive of Lovecraft's work (an "Eldritch Location" film). Arguably, there's a hint of "The Outsider" there, and the time-traveling zombie thing might suggest enough sci-fi/horror blend to satisfy some "Lovecraftian" criteria, though I think that's kind of stretching it. On the other hand, the abandoned farmhouse location, at least, is bizarre and fairly creepy....

Note: This rating is not intended as a measure of quality, merely of how closely related to Lovecraftian "Weird" fiction the work is.

  • Horror-Movie-a-Day, (link) - "...The last half hour was one of the most incoherent things I’ve ever seen... the incoherency doesn’t bother me, and I am sure with another viewing or two it would make more sense. The problem is it’s not scary. Ever. All in all, Abandoned isn’t a terrible movie by any means..., but it’s a highly disappointing one."

Keeper Notes

  • I'm not sure it's worth the trouble of viewing the film and then trying to convert it to a Call of Cthulhu scenario, but a group of investigators being sent to explore a creepy farmhouse in the middle of a European wasteland to find out what happened to an American woman who vanished while trying to claim her inheritance and learn more about her mysterious past might provide some sort of plot hook....
