The Old Ones have risen. Monsters walk the Earth. Humanity is finished, but the struggle continues ... Which Great Old Ones will rule the ruins of Earth? Now, you take charge! Cthulhu Wars is a fast-moving strategy game about the end of the world. You take the part of various monsterous aliens seeking to dominate the world. You can play as Great Cthulhu, or you can take charge of the slithering menace of the Crawling Chaos, command the bestial hordes of the Black Goat, or direct the insane minions or the Yellow Sign.
The game features a huge map of a devastated Earth to fight over, and 72 high-quality figures, all drawn from the dread Cthulhu Mythos, including Cthulhu himself. Cultists, Shoggoths, and many other horrors. These figures are sculpted in 28mm scale to be compatible with many other tabletop games.
Unlock spells and summon monsters unique to your own Faction, each of which are strikingly different in their tactics and techniques. A strategy that works for the Black Goat will be ineffective for the Crawling Chaos. Each Faction has multiple unique strategies for winning, so Cthulhu Wars has incredible depth and replay value. This game supports 2 -4 players, with an additional map layout that can support even more factions (purchased separately) in a 5 player game.
Cthulhu Wars is a combination of strategic gaming and Lovecraftian horror, with the bonus of high quality monster figures to make your game even more fun. Sandy Petersen, its creator, is well-known as one of the top game designers in the industry, and this is his best work so far!
Comments / Trivia
This entry is for the core game of Cthulhu Wars and fourteen expansions (listed in the "Expansions" section above) funded by the original Cthulhu Wars Kickstarter campaign. All the expansions require a copy of the core game to play. Seven more expansions can be found with Cthulhu Wars: Onslaught Two.
Before Cthulhu Wars: Onslaught Two, there were only seven factions available to play - four with the core game, and three more in expansions (the Azathoth Expansion is not available as a starting faction.) There was no faction for an eighth player to play when using the 6 to 8 Player Map Expansion; the maximum number of players was still seven.
In addition to the expansions, the Kickstarter campaign for Cthulhu Wars had several add-on items, such as custom dice, plastic gates, and player markers.
Originally designed as a 3 to 4 player game, rules for 2 players were one of the stretch goals unlocked early in the Kickstarter campaign.
