Augustus Samuel Darcy was born at Thetford, Norfolk in November 1897, the son of a solicitor. his sister Ethel was born three years later. While at school at Ely, Cambridgeshire he met his lifelong friend and literary executor, Amery Greville.

After service in the Great War, Darcy graduated in History from the University of Oxford and worked as a freelance journalist in London.
