Scenarios based on or otherwise compatible with "Proto-Lovecraftian" literature, such as that by M.R. James, William Hope Hodgson, Edgar Allan Poe, Algernon Blackwood, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Robert W. Chambers, etc.
These are generally (but not necessarily) Cthulhu Mythos-free Gaslight scenarios, perhaps featuring a Supernatural Detective style format or background, or perhaps a post-Gothic style employing updated versions of Ghosts, Ghouls, Vampires, Werewolves, Elementals, Faeries, Mummies, etc. Some scenarios may be quasi-Pulp Cthulhu or even borderline Steampunk in flavor, employing the "cutting edge" of Victorian science (and pseudo-science), such as with ray-machines, or alternate timelines (such as scenarios inspired by the original spirit of Chambers' King in Yellow (fiction)), and perhaps employing (and very likely defeating) a skeptical and scientific method or investigation into a threat that proves super-natural or otherwise beyond conventional science.
Note that Lovecraft himself dabbled in this sort of literature, for example with stories like "From Beyond (fiction)" and "Shunned House (fiction)".
