Bal-Sagoth was a city that existed up until some time in the Viking Age. Some of the inhabitants worshipped the Great Old One Gol-goroth.
Bal-Sagoth was visited by Turlogh O'Brien and Athelstane the Saxon, who ended up playing a part in the city's downfall. It was eventually invaded by neighbouring savages and destroyed.
The memory of Bal-Sagoth survived into later ages as an obscure myth of a lost kingdom comparable to Atlantis.
