Stone Tablets for contacting the Deep Ones first appear in H.P. Lovecraft's The Shadow Over Innsmouth (fiction)....
Description
"In the end Walakea give Obed a funny kind of 'thingumajig' made out of lead or something, that he said would bring up the fish things from any place in the water where there might be a nest of them. The idea was to drop it down with the right kind of prayers and such. Walakea admitted that the things were scattered all over the world, so that anybody that looked about could find a nest and bring them up if they were wanted. Tell me what Obed did with that funny-shaped lead thingumajig that Walakea give him? Hey, boy? And what did they all howl on May-Eve, and again the next Halloween?"
