In former dreams Carter had seen quaint lumbering Buopoths come shyly out of that wood to drink, but now he could not glimpse any.

The rarely-seen beast is sacred to the river-god Oukranos, and it is unlucky to describe it, but according to fable, those who see one are destined for strange fortune, either good or ill.
