The scenario is set in the 1880s. It seems that the author did this because “it should prove impossible to kill a pair of fully grown lions with the kind of weaponry available in 1880s backwood America”. Actually, the bison was hunted almost to extinction in the 1860s and 1870s by hunters using powerful rifles such as the Sharps and “trapdoor” Springfield. These commonly available weapons could bring down a lion as easily as a bison.<br />
