The series sometimes gets dismissed as a "Christian show" for a casual resemblance to the belief in the "Rapture" by some sects of Christianity in which a select portion of the world's Christian population is prophesied to vanish in the End of Days, but the series treats the events instead as a terrifying, irrational event without any rhyme or reason that can be understood by humans, with good and evil and ordinary people alike vanishing at random, one small town in Texas being left untouched for seemingly no reason anyone can understand, hints at scientific answers that fail to answer anything well and raise more questions than they resolve, some hints at the intervention of supernatural beings which are indistinguishable from insanity, and the 98% of the population that was left behind crumbling under the trauma and turning to bizarre doomsday cults for comfort and answers which science, government, and traditional religions cannot provide. It is, in essence, a basically Lovecraftian treatment of a superficially "Christian" mystery.
