This movie comes across almost (but not quite) like a low-rent rip-off of "[[The Case of Charles Dexter Ward (ficton)]]", without any overt Mythos references. In spite of the rather pedestrian witchcraft element and lack of goopy tentacle-monsters, I couldn't help feeling just a hint of Lovecraft's variety of pulp horror at work here.

The protagonist is a shallow "valley girl" character attending a rich uncle's funeral in France only to fall under the influence of a cult of witches with suspiciously American accents; the characterization sometimes threatens to stumble into self-parody, but never quite falls, with the protagonist starting off self-absorbed, the gradually and imperceptibly moving to dispirited, before ending up just about sympathetic enough that the danger she faces seems genuinely ominous, where it could have turned into the sort of thing I could have cheered on hoping it would kill less likable protagonist. At first, it threatened to be a somewhat goofy, naive, and half-baked sort of low-budget affair, but it ended up coming across by the end as just a little more subtle, self-aware, and skillful than it was letting on, and the plot twists ultimately worked better than I'd have credited the movie for; by the end, I felt like I'd seen the work of someone who may not have been one of the best-funded or most talented producers and directors in the world, but made up for it in caring a lot about this sort of simple, retro, unpretentious gothic potboiler. With so many things seeming to be stacked against it, I wound up liking this movie in spite of myself, and thought this ended up a far better and more effective suspense/thriller movie than it could have been. 2/5 stars, but a surprisingly subtle, entertaining, well-meaning, and likeable 2/5 stars.'
