The investigators are asked to look into the disappearance of Andrew Keetling, a Boston art collector. The normally retiring businessman has recently been dating an aspiring artist, Josephine Garsetti, but neither of them have been seen in two weeks. Three of the young woman's possibly Mythos-based paintings hang in Keetling's study.

Josephine Garsetti has for years been under the influence of The Thing Hanging in the Void, a living nightmare that feeds upon human souls and dwells in the Dreamlands. Blood sacrifices in the presence of an ancient artifact called the Dark Stone draw The Thing closer to our waking world, and it needs only one more victim to complete its goal. Following the recent destruction of her murderous Boston cult by police, Garsetti has returned to her hometown of Muskrat Rapids, Pennsylvania with both Andrew Keetling and the Dark Stone.
