While trying to locate a rash of missing children in New York in 1933, the investigators realize that the disappearances cluster around areas of shadow, and that they are somehow linked to showings of a film by Fritz Lang, ''M le Maudit''. They look into the film's production and find the source of the evil that permeates the film is an entity linked to the sinister Crucible of Shadows, a temple within the mysterious Empire of Shadows, and the source of much creativity in the mortal realm under the auspices of the Master of the Coils, an entity linked to Yog-Sothoth. Yet the quest leads them only further into the shadows, to confront the Chewer of Words, a nightmare that once reigned over artistic creation in the Realm of Shadows, but who is now trapped in a silent prison. The investigators must foil the Chewer's plot to affect the moral realm through Lang's film.
