==Summary==
You’re on the way to the home of your old friend, retired legionary Cael Rufus. He retired last year and was given a tract of land north of Viroconium in Britannia, a territory only recently being settled as it was never worth the trouble of cultivating before. He’s a good friend but one apparently with a problem: your invitation came with a message that he might want your help “looking into something while you’re here”. Hopefully it isn’t anything that would get in the way of the [[Halloween|Samhain]] holiday....

===Synopsis===
The new land being settled, where Cael’s farm is located, was once the seat of an ancient Serpent Man kingdom. The Serpent Folk were in time defeated and sealed up in caves underground, but have always been there, waiting for a chance to return to the surface to exact revenge on man. Their opportunity arrived when Roman engineers digging wells broke into their caves; the Serpent Folk have now begun sneaking out at night to play pranks on the Roman settlers and, as that does not drive the settlers off, the Serpent Folk escalate their attacks on the settlers, with plans to kidnap human "breeding stock" from the settlers. The investigators must now help their friend Cael protect his farm against the Serpent Folk and defeat the monsters once and for all.

Setting: Viroconium, in northern Roman Britannia; the scenario could probably be easily adapted to the [[Dark Ages]] as well, and should work equally well if set in some lonely corner of England, Ireland, Scotland, or Wales.

Special Notes: This scenario suffers from a few humorous typographical errors; these aren't bad enough to make the scenario unreadable, but might be a bit distracting. No maps are provided for handouts, but this scenario could probably have used them, and a creative keeper might produce some in advance.

Dependence on Halloween: Minimal - [[Halloween|Samhain]] is presented as a rather generic festival (feasting, drinking, dancing, music, and story-telling), and pretty much any holiday could be substituted, though there seems little point in making such a substitution: no prior familiarity with or "buy-in" for Halloween is required to run this scenario.

Sequel Plot Hooks: None by default, though it's possible to seed some into the Serpent Men's caverns or ruins. Cael seems likely to be a source of support and further adventures if he survives, and Cael's trouble-making rival similarly seems likely to be a source of further adventures if the rival survives and ends up on friendly terms with the PCs or Cael. This isolated frontier village seems like a promising source of future trouble.
