===Synopsis===
{{Spoiler|The investigators enter the Empire of Shadows in pursuit of the Manchu sorcerer Sayk Fong Lee. They must find a magical compass to point the way to the portal the exits at Lee's Harbin palace in Manchuria back in the mundane world. The quest brings them into the company of a troupe of wandering performers who secretly are transporting the Celestial Flayer. En route, they must also confront the shade of Qian Lan, who blames the investigators for his death and for letting the Japanese agent of the Black Ocean, Tsatoba, go free. Upon exiting into the real world, the investigators infiltrate Sayk Fong Lee's palace, where he is to be coronated as the new Ransomer of Divine Right. Yet their capture leads to imminent execution until Liu Chen begs her father, Lee, to spare them for saving her in Paris. Lee brandishes the Necronomicon, but then destroys the tome—he only needs the cover, which bears a tattoo he will use as a model with the master tattoo artist Agaï Chen. Nevertheless, the current Ransomer of Divine Right appears and recaptures the blasphemous tome's cover, which is made from his own skin.}}
