While searching for five stolen paintings, the investigators discover a horrific plot from the world of shadows to reclaim China.

===Synopsis===
The investigators are invited to a reception in the Pei Tchou district, where the imperial Lady Heou Yang plans to unveil a beautiful painting of a former empress. However, when the painting turns up stolen, the investigators must find out what happened to it. They learn that four other paintings have also gone missing, eventually tracing them to the Monastery of the Morning Cloud. There, a theater troupe accuses the head monk, Flowering Mirror, of stealing the artworks, but the monk soon turns up dead near his quarters. Strange singing lures the investigators into horrific gallery on display in a crypt, where they catch a glimpse of the Empire of Shadows and the terrifying Empress Lü. Eventually, a poet puts them on the trail of a hermit and forces them to actually enter the Empire of Shadows. There they must recover the paintings and destroy them before Empress Lü and the First Emperor are able to take new human forms, raise an immense army, and reconquer the Middle Kingdom.

The scenario takes place in the 9th century, a thousand years before the main campaign story of ''Les 5 supplices''. The scenario is the only one of the campaign that assumes the investigators are Chinese rather than foreigners in China. Six pregenerated investigators are presented at the end of the scenario.
