Lady Maïni leads them through an altered state of consciousness called the Opium Dream to help zero in on the location of Agaï Chen, the master tattoo artist they have been looking for since they were in Paris, France. The dream reveals that Chen is being held by the queen of Zaoshou, a Deep One Hybrid. She plans to turn the tattoo artist over to the invading Japanese for her own ends—a fate Chen is agreeable to, as the Japanese agree to hand him over to Sayk Fong Lee, who will cure him of the plague. The investigators must infiltrate the submerged territory of the Shen De (Deep Ones) to locate a map of the Portals to the Empire of Shadows. In the process, they find the Source of the Inks, an imprisoned creature whose blood, when used as tattoo ink, bestows those tattoos with magical power. Eventually, the Japanese navy arrives and attacks the island, sending the investigators scrambling to find Say Fong Lee's palace.}}
