Essentially "[[The Case of Charles Dexter Ward (fiction)]]" without references to Yog-Sothoth, this show is about an ancient, secret cult who can project their minds after death into the bodies of other people. I felt that the Lovecraftian atmosphere was at best sort of vague in the first season, but I suspect that it would have gotten more overt had the show been given a chance to develop elements such as the "ghost machine" (some sort of creepy fringe science device that lets ordinary people hear the voices of disembodied spirits), the cult's ancient conspiracy, the cult's library full of strange tomes written by generations of the same personalities in different bodies, and so on.

Former LAPD officer Jack Whelan has a troubled, violent past but has grown accustomed in recent years to a quiet life with wife Amy. But that low-key existence fractures when she disappears. That's when old schoolmate Gary Fischer appears on Jack's doorstep seeking help with a murder case that draws the former cop deeper into the mystery of his wife's disappearance. The more Jack investigates Gary's case, the more complex and surreal his discoveries become, and they pull him down the dark path of his past and toward a conspiracy that leads to a secret society, ''Qui Reverti'', that may be responsible for everything.
