{{spoiler|A struggling married couple try to reconnect at an idyllic lake house, but their relationship is tested when their young, autistic daughter begins to fixate on an imaginary friend that may or may not be real: a "Fish Man" who wants to take her away; her mother's paranoia and suspicion that the neighbors might be child molesters and that her husband might be having an affair with the child's nanny, followed soon afterward by the child's sudden disappearance midway through the film muddy the waters about whether this is all in the imaginations of the child and her parents, or might have a more mundane but still terrifying human explanation, but the strange trails of water through the house, enigmatic disturbances by night, and the child's strange re-appearance when she is found submerged in a hot tub full of water where, she says, she is learning to breathe like a fish so she can go away with her imaginary friend all begin to hint that there might be something more sinister happening than meets the eyes. By the end of the film, the child disappears again, this time permanently, and the surviving family are ultimately left with no real rational explanation for what happened.}}
