* Baphomet may have been an invention of the Inquisition. The origin of the Baphomet myth seems to begin with the charges of the Inquisition against the Knights Templar: the name "Baphomet" seems to be a corruption of the name "Mohammed", and appeared alongside references to the Knights Templar calling upon Allah. It seems the Inquisition was charging that the Knights Templar had converted to some fantastic form of Islam at some point during or after the crusades, with the knights being forced to worship idols of the prophet Mohammed under the name Baphomet, with the idols being described in confessions induced by torture as severed heads, two-faced gods, cats, carvings of hermaphroditic beings, and other diverse creatures, and tortured knights confessing to being initiated into the cult by being forced to spit or urinate upon the cross, submit to acts of sodomy, and other extravagant and outlandish claims. The notion that members of secret societies were being inducted into the worship of strange pagan gods captured the collective imagination of the public, and similar charges were routinely made against Freemasons, unpopular clergy, and others in the following years. A later association of the Baphomet with pagan cults that worshipped goats as fertility or virility symbols led to the most well-known depictions of the Baphomet as an enthroned, goat-headed hermaphrodite with a candle between its horns, a symbol which was adopted by Satanic groups by the early 20th century.
