As a plot hook to get things moving, consider making the new laird a player character. Replace references to the laird with a new NPC, his agent. The agent has scouted ahead and sent the laird the reports on pagan activity. When the laird and the other investigators arrive in St Combs, the agent has gone missing. Maybe he turns up later with some vital information or is another victim of the cult.

If the investigators blow up the distillery, the Keeper might decide that the Deep Ones take their revenge with a tsunami - maybe a couple of Swim rolls?
