"In late Victorian London lived many detectives who were ''The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes''!"  An anthology series of mystery stories adaptations written by [[Arthur Conan Doyle]]'s contemporary rivals in the genre.  In [[William Hope Hodgson]]'s "Horse of the Invisible", supernatural detective [[Carnacki]] investigates the haunting of a country house that threatens the wedding of the homeowner's daughter and her fiance; the evidence quickly leads the detective to suspect supernatural forces are at work in this case, but even a ghost-finder can be wrong!
