The Investigators are the only hope for Bartholemew "Barty" Appley IV:  once a respectable gentleman of leisure and an amateur historian, engaged to a lovely young teacher named Ms. Hanna Pickering.  His life began its downward self-destructive spiral after the death of his father, Bartholemew Appley III. They had always been close and his father’s sudden death of a heart attack left the younger Appley heartbroken. This natural grief of Bartholemew Appley IV turned into something quite different during a visit to the family crypt.  Now, young Appley  is rarely sober for long:  he has a drinking problem, and hosts huge parties out of his fine home, fueled with illegal whiskey supplied by the [[O'Bannion Gang]], which Appley frequently leaves in a drunken fugue to drive drunk across the Arkham countryside.  Tragically, Young Bartholemew Appley III has finally gone too far, hurting innocent people in a drunk driving incident, and the investigators are his only hope for salvation....

The investigators must intervene on Bartholemew Appley’s behalf. They must prevent him from being committed to Arkham Sanatorium or conviction of vehicular assault. They must free him from his connection to the [[O’Bannion Gang]], who supply the illegal alcohol for his parties. Lastly, they must save Mr. Appley from himself. Unless forced to come to terms with the horrors he witnessed in his family’s crypt, Mr. Appley eventually kills himself. Alcoholism is already accomplishing this but the possibility of a fatal accident, or a direct suicide attempt, grow likely as his situation deteriorates.

Setting:  Nominally 1920s Arkham, with locations and characters that directly reference Arkham elements established in detailed source books, but the scenario could probably be easily adapted to other locations by simply changing the names of characters and locations.

Special Notes: 
* The scenario generally can be resolved as-written without violence, except for dealing with the rather pathetic Ghouls (who generally don't seem to deserve the violence:  they're starving, and spared Appley's life as best as possible by trying to convince him he was dreaming); creative keepers should consider providing some sort of peaceful resolution for the Ghoul problem.  Meanwhile...
* The [[O'Banion Gang]] suggests another problem, an unpleasant problem which can only be bought off as-written, as resorting to violence with them is extremely dangerous.  Some keepers might prefer to encourage the Ghoul and Gang problem to solve each other, by inserting a sub-plot involving the gangsters trying to find Appley's hidden wealth and stumbling upon the Appley family crypt while snooping around, where the Ghouls are desperately looking for a fresh meal, while the investigators need a way to get them all to leave the property, permanently, preferably with minimal direct violence....

Dependence on Halloween:  The monograph this scenario is included in is related to Chaosium's "Halloween Horror" contests, but there are are no references to Halloween in this scenario.

Sequel Plot Hooks:  No explicit sequel plot hooks, though the characters and Arkham setting naturally lend themselves to connections with any [[Arkham]] and [[Lovecraft Country]] based scenarios.
