An anthology police drama series that tells a different story each season/year, in which police investigations unearth the personal and professional secrets of those involved, both within and outside the law.  Season one focuses on the lives of two Louisiana State Police homicide detectives under investigation by Internal Affairs over their a seventeen-year period of their partnership together; they must recount their investigations into the occult murder of a prostitute and the histories of several other unsolved crimes that hint at the involvement of a "King in Yellow", the perpetrator of which remains at large. The first season explores themes of philosophical pessimism, masculinity, and religion, and critics have analyzed the show's portrayal of women, its auteurist sensibility, and the influence of comics and weird horror fiction on its narrative.

Not much that happens in the series is explicitly "Lovecraftian", but the first season did drop numerous references to ''[[The King in Yellow (fiction)]]'', featured a bizarre cult with some eerie stick-figure symbols, and included some fantastic "eldritch locations" for characters whose points of view were the television equivalent of unreliable narrators to experience some very strange things in; commentators have also pointed out marked similarities between lines of dialogue in the series and the writings of [[Thomas Ligotti]].  (The second season was presented as a more traditional police procedural.)
