Updated and expanded on the 1984 original with new encounters and expanded historical and background material.

The cover illustration by Tom Sullivan originally appeared as a colour plate inside the Fourth Edition of the Call of Cthulhu rulebook. It was originally commissioned as the cover painting for the "Great Old Ones" supplement. It depicted a scene from a scenario which Sandy Petersen was going to write for the GOO book, but was never completed.
"Seven Sinister Situations. In every Call of Cthulhu campaign certain situations arise regularly. This book takes seven of those situations and turns them into horifying adventures. Each story is meant to be used freely by the Keeper (the gamemaster) when he or she needs a quick plot for an impromptu game or as fillers in larger campaigns. Investigators' Information, Keeper's Background, and suggestions for use are provided for each episode. The center four, gray-edged, pages are to be carefully pulled out and handed to the players appropriately as per the scenario."

Curse of Cthulhu (1990, Chaosium product ID# 3306), by Keith Herber, is a supplement to Call of Cthulhu.

The main portion of this supplement contains the entire campaign entitled "Fungi from Yoggoth" in which the players are pitted against an evil Brotherhood/cult in a globe-trotting adventure, possibly including a trip to the Dreamlands. Prominant NPC, Paul LeMond, a famous "spirit medium", is instrumental in giving players clues and helping the keeper nudge the players back on track should they wander too far away from the story.

The supplement also contains three stand-alone scenarios, ideal for beginning players and keepers as well as experienced ones.

----

"The Case" is directly taken from the "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward" by H.P. Lovecraft. Players take the part of an old friend of "Brian Timmons" who has apparently lost his mind. You do not need to be familiar with the original story to run or play this scenario.

Keeper helpers:

1. Not required, but a good idea to read "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward" before running this scenario. It will help solidify the plot of the scenario in your mind and give you more cues for role-playing NPCs.

2. This scenario offers opportunities to foreshadow both "Wail of the Witch" and "Fungi from Yoggoth" if you so desire. Also, consider running "Wail of the Witch" before running "The Case"... there is a chance that one of your player characters can be "possessed" by a Witch. If this comes to pass, this possessed character could become the 'Douglass Timmons" NPC in "The Case".

3. This scenario is great for showing players that their actions have consequences and teaching them that Call of Cthulhu is not your typical "shoot-em-up" RPG. For example, one obvious solution to the scenario would be to shoot Brian in the sanitarium. Players must understand that they can't just go into an institution shooting guns, their names would be on the visitors register and their description would be available from the staff. Their wanted character would not be able to proceed freely in future play.

4. There is an opportunity for players to perform a "spell" they find in a journal. They actually need to do the REVERSE of the spell they find in a journal. Keepers should be sure to have great descriptions handy for the process and the results. If the players take this route, the scenario can have an unusual and exciting climax.

5. Good scenario for introducing RPG to novices.

6. Good scenario for introducing Cthulhu-style investigative style RPG to players experienced in the more action-oriented variety.

----

"The Wail of the Witch" takes investigators to Salem, Massachusetts, where a reporter's death in an old cemetary hints at something sinister lurking there. The players try to learn what story the reporter was working on and uncover clues which originate at the time of the Salem Witch Trials and a cult dedicated to Nyarlathotep.

Keeper Helpers:

1. A good scenario for beginners/refresher for experienced players. This is because this scenario relates to a historical time in which most players would have a passing familiarity, easy stair-stepping of clues for players to follow and keeper to organize, includes some mythos "monsters" which are logically introduced into the plot.

2. A bit of online reading on the Salem Witch Trials would be helpful prior to keeping this scenario. University of Virginia and Discovery.com are good places to begin.

3. While the clues are laid out nicely in this scenario, players tend to follow tangents and get off the story. A good way to get them back on track includes "touristy" items, NPC's and additional newspaper/magazine clips. All of which player nudges are easily accomplished in this scenario.

----

"The Haunted House" is just as the name suggests, the "ghost busting" of a house. This scenario takes place in Grand Rapids, Michigan in a house plagued by strange and deadly events. This is NOT a mythos adventure, though it could be easily made into one should the keeper desire.

Keeper Helpers:

1. This scenario is ideal for introducing players and Keepers to horror-style role-playing. It is very detailed. The descriptions, including the history and layout of the house, keeper information, clues, only one very specific monster, etc. Also, since everyone is familiar with what a "haunted house" is.. there are great opportunities for cliched "jump out of the closet" scares and movie-style fun.

2. This scenario is ideal for introducing players to RPG's in general and starting a gaming group. Can be introduced as a "Halloween" event with weekly sessions in the month of October (due to the detail, it will definitely take more than one session to run).
A Full-Length Campaign, Five More Heart-Pounding Adventures, and a Full-Color Mythos Gallery! The Rise of Forgotten R'lyeh. Cthulhu sleeps in the corpse city of R'lyeh. Through unblinking eyes he has watched mountains grow and empires rise and fall. He has lain quiet, unmoving. Now he stirs. He senses that the stars are once again converging into their proper formations. His worshippers have been plotting for the day when their mighty lord would once again walk the earth. This day is now! CTHULHU CLASSICS is a collection of the most terrifying adventures for the Call of Cthulhu game that have ever been published. The centerpiece of this book is Shadows of Yog-Sothoth, a monumental seven-part campaign. Shadows reveals details of the Silver Twilight, an international organization dedicated to prematurely forcing the rise of R’lyeh and the release of dread Cthulhu. Five additional tales of terror explore the impact of the Mythos on the natural world. Finally, a gallery of full-color plates vividly depict the Mythos menace and those who understand too deeply its secrets.
Pestilence and Plague in Elizabethan London,
Secrets of the Spanish Inquisition

Times of Terror
During the month of January, 1603, London is in the grip of a bitterly cold winter. The air is crisp with a heavy frost that is slow to thaw. Rumors abound that the plague is once more abroad in the city- knowledge that weighs heavily on the populace.

Numerous houses have already been boarded up; people have again taken to slaughtering stray dogs, wearing too-strong perfumes, and applying arsenic under the armpits. The Pest House is filling, and deaths are on the rise.

Now you hear that Queen Elizabeth is unwell, and will probably die before spring. Everyone is wary of others, and foreigners are carriers.

It is a depressing time to be about in the city.

Strange Aeons contains three adventures set in unusual times and places: in Renaissance Spain during the logical dread and austere Spanish Inquisition, in a twenty-first century lunar outpost, and in Elizabethan England, among certain talented playwrights. Six pre-generated characters are provided for each scenario.

A musician and writer, Keith was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1949. He first discovered H.P. Lovecraft via a Ray Bradbury story, "Pillar of Fire," in the early 1960s. Intrigued by an author Bradbury chose to compare to Poe, Keith sought out Lovecraft at the local library and read all three of the Arkham House collections front to back. Lovecraft became his favorite author of horror.

Almost thirty when his family and friends discovered Dungeons & Dragons and a new "hobby" called role playing, he immediately snatched up a copy of Call of Cthulhu when it first showed up on the shelves of his local game store. One trip through the original "The Haunting" scenario and he was hooked.

He made his first submission to Chaosium in 1983. Over the following years he published nearly fifty scenarios with Chaosium, including the full-length books The Fungi from Yuggoth, Trail of Tsathoggua, Spawn of Azathoth, Arkham Unveiled, and Return to Dunwich, along with sourcebooks like the original Investigators’ Companions and Keeper’s Compendium. Serving as editor of the line from late 1989 through 1993, he edited and contributed to numerous books, developed the Lovecraft Country series, and launched the initial line of Cycle fiction.

Fired by Chaosium in 1994 and unable to produce any more CoC material, he free lanced for White Wolf’s World of Darkness producing, among other things, two novels based on WW’s Vampire game. He later toiled in the cyber mines as an editor for Cinescape magazine.

Currently residing in Florida, he’s returned to his roots and can be found playing blues in various dives and juke joints across the state. For more information on his current whereabouts, visit www.tammyhatch.com.

David Conyers, born Sydney, Australia, May 30th. Writer, illustrator and editor.

An Australian author whose childhood was spent in Oxford in the United Kingdom and the Adelaide Hills. He moved to Melbourne in his late teenage years and attended the University of Melbourne where he completed a degree in Civil Engineering in 1993. Once qualified he worked across Australia on several remote outback construction projects including a foundations project for a casino in Melbourne, a pipeline in the Pilbara, and a mining processing plant in central Western Australia.

In 1995 David travelled to Africa with fellow writer David Witteveen visiting Zimbabwe, Zambia and Kenya. His exposure to African culture and their vastly different standards of living had a profound influence on his writing ever since.

In the mid to late 1990s David transitioned from engineering to marketing communications. He married in 2003 and moved to Adelaide with his wife in 2005.

David’s first published Call of Cthulhu scenario was Devil%27s Children, Pagan Publishing’s first professionally bound full colour-cover book, co-written with David Witteveen and David Godley, and released in 1993. It was during this period that he wrote and presented Call of Cthulhu supplements at Melbourne gaming conventions with fellow writers Richard Watts, Mark Morrison, Penelope Love and David Witteveen.

David returned to writing in the early 2000s. He had his first gaming article published in The Black Seal in 2003 and his first Chaosium publication “Darkest Calling” in The Stars Are Right! in 2004. His next project for Chaosium was to expand Keith Herber’s original Spawn of Azathoth campaign. He is the author of the scenario “Beyond the Edges” appearing in Secrets of San Francisco. David's next big project for Chaosium was the Secrets of Kenya sourcebook.

As an illustrator for the game David has produced maps and artwork for the supplements Secrets of Kenya, The Stars Are Right!, Spawn of Azathoth, Secrets of New York, Miskatonic University and Secrets of San Francisco.

Apart from The Black Seal, Call of Cthulhu magazines that have featured his work include Book of Dark Wisdom, The Whisperer and Worlds of Cthulhu. He collaborated on several of these articles with the Mythos authors William Jones and Daniel Harms, amongst others.

A speculative fiction author, David also writes tales of the Cthulhu Mythos. His first publication was “Screaming Crawler” in 2003 appearing in the first issue of Dreaming in R’lyeh and his first professional sale was “Vanishing Curves” appearing in the Book of Dark Wisdom in 2004. Other Mythos fiction has appeared in the anthologies Horrors Beyond, Cthulhu Express, Hardboiled Cthulhu and Arkham Tales. Many of David’s fictional creations appear in his gaming supplements and vis versa. In 2004 David joined the staff of the Book of Dark Wisdom as the magazine’s first Associate Editor.

David’s contributions to the Cthulhu Mythos include the Arabian Nights style tome The Masked Messenger, and the ongoing fiction character Major Harrison Peel.
