That which is currently known about Augustus Samuel Darcy is as follows:

His father is a solicitor and he was born in Thetford in November, 1897 and has a sister who is three years his junior. He went to school in Ely where he met Amery Greville. He served in the Great War (meeting Greville on the Vimy Ridge) and afterwards graduated in History from the University of Oxford before working as a freelance journalist in London.

Darcy was a magician and member of an occult organisation known only as The Brotherhood. In 1933 they commissioned him to write a guide for members visiting the capital. It appears that he discovered a dark organisation in London's occult underbelly and it is possible he became involved with a Magical War. A few months later he was dead.
Darcy mentions 'three main occult orders of London'. One is the Brotherhood of which he is a member, these are the other two:

* Freemasons
* Community of the Inner Light

These two organisations are both 'real world' organisations. The Community of Inner Light was founded after Dion Fortune grew tired of the Golden Dawn's infighting. The Golden Dawn had broken apart by the time of Darcy's death but their legacy survives into the investigation through Aleister Crowley and his work on the Enochian Calls of Dr Dee.

There are also several other organisations and personalities in London who may be linked to the murder and The Magical War:

* Aleister Crowley
* Club of the Seven Dreams
* Miss Verity Dyse
* International Psychics Club
* Woolwich Automata Club

As well as these, there are several mentions of strange activities such as occult dancing in Epping Forest, tunnelling in Greenwich and odd goings-on in the tunnels around Aldgate East tube station. Whether these are linked to Darcy's death remains to be discovered.

On page 132 of the Liber Fumo there is an Enochian phrase underneath a description of the Golden Dawn.

The Enochian is as follows:

Mals Med Don Gisg Graph Ceph Veh Graph Van Graph Van Pal Van Na Gon Fam Veh Graph Gon Un Van Ged Graph Pa Ur Med Drux Gal Gon Ger Van Gen Or Van Tal Graph

Which would be rendered in English:

P O R T E Z C E U X U H I S C E I A U I U G E B L O N D Q U I F U M E

This proved to be a French Pangram; 'Portez ce vieux whisky au juge blond qui fume', which translates as 'Go take this old whisky to the blond judge who smokes'.

It is unclear whether this is simply to demonstrate all of the Enochian letters or has some deeper significance. It is odd that a French pangram was used instead of the more traditional 'Quick Brown Fox' which would seem more appropriate for an Englishman. As yet the phrase in either English or French has not been linked to anything.
As yet there has been no solution to the cipher. One option which appears to have been disproven was the Trithemius cipher in which the Golden Dawn documents were encoded. The Golden Dawn appear to be involved with the circumstances surrounding Darcy's death so the link to the cipher seemed a good idea. At this point it seems probable that this is some form of Vigenère cipher in which case a solution seems unlikely without the correct code word or phrase.
The Guide is replete with contacts, rumours and clues which will guide you on your quest for forbidden knowledge. Written as the companion volume to Bookhounds of London for Trail of Cthulhu, it can be used as a Keeper’s resource as well as an in-game artefact for players in any Mythos game.

In 1933 a mysterious secret society commissioned Augustus Darcy to compile a guide to occult London. By the end of that year, Darcy was dead. Within these tales of The Smoke’s legendary past are scattered clues to its future. Was a magical war brewing? Were forces from other dimensions breaking through into our own? Who were the mysterious Brotherhood? Who killed Augustus Darcy and why? After eighty years Darcy’s book is here for you to make up your own mind. Use it as a guide as you venture into Darcy’s world and may your gods be with you in the days ahead.

It is a work of fiction, an autobiography, an occult miscellany and a murder mystery, a book which should not be read, and yet cannot be cast aside. It is all these things and more, but most of all it is a guide for your own journey through the streets of the Big Smoke.

Bookman: /* Organisations possibly linked to his death and the Magical War */

The death of Augustus Darcy
Reports of his death seem confused as the dust-jacket copy suggests no cause of death was established but Greville's introduction states that a 'local newspaper' had a short piece about his drowning in the Thames.

Organisations possibly linked to his death and the Magical War
Darcy mentions 'three main occult orders of London'. One is the Brotherhood of which he is a member, these are the other two:

* Freemasons

* Aleister Crowley
* Club of the Seven Dreams
The list of each Call and Aethyr is below, there are 18 Calls or Keys and 30 Aethyr.

As yet there no connections has been determined between the Aethyr and the stations they sit upon or the Aethyr and the Calls to which they are connected. It seems likely that the Aethyr represent gates or sites of power which the different calls will awaken. Considering the apocalyptic nature of the Calls it would seem that someone of some group is attempting to awaken a significant power beneath London. This is probably linked to the Prophecies of Merlin mentioned in the Liber Fumo and seemingly connected to the magical war that is hinted at in the entries. This is currently speculation based on hints in the Liber and the text of the Calls. More of the map may be neccessary to determine the nature of the connections between stations, Aethyr and Calls. The idea of a mystical power linked across London by its buildings and locations is not a new one. After the Great Fire the naturalist, bibliophile, Royalist and scientist Sir John Evelyn offered a plan for the rebuilding of London which was based on the Kabbalah. This plan is mentioned on the very first pages of Darcy's Guide and may well have inspired the magical plot.

At this moment there is one other piece which is not a circle but is still part of the overall pattern. This part shows the City of London.

One of the clues to the Murder of Augustus Darcy is a map of London marked with mysterious symbols and lines. The map has been cut into sections and circles have been cut out of the various sections. At the centre of the circles is a tube station and on each circle is a mysterious symbol.
Two types of circle have been discovered so far.

Bookman:

One of the clues to the Murder of Augustus Darcy is a map of London marked with mysterious symbols and lines. The map has been cut into sections and circles have been cut out of the various sections. At the centre of the circles is a tube station and on each circle is a mysterious symbol.

Two types of circle have been discovered so far. One type bears a phrase from The Enochian Calls used by Dr Dee and later Aleister Crowley (who appears in the Liber Fumo. These are a sequence of angelic summonings which refer to cataclysms and a day of judgement. The others bear the name of an Aethyr, angelic presences mentioned in much of Crowley's writing and particularly Liber 418.
