Cthylla is a [[Great Old One]] and is the youngest progeny of [[Cthulhu]] and his androgynous mate ''Idh-yaa''. She came from the [[star]] [[Cthulhu Mythos celestial bodies#Xoth|Xoth]], but now dwells on Earth in [[Yhe]] where she is guarded by Cthulhu's minions. Cthylla is destined to give birth to Great Cthulhu again when he is destroyed in the distant future. She is essential for Cthulhu's plans, and is thus vigilantly guarded by countless [[Yuggya]] and [[Deep One]]s.

Cthylla was not physically described by Lumley, but was featured in Tina L. Jens's short story ''In His Daughter's Darkling Womb''. Cthylla has the appearance of a gigantic, red-bodied, black-ringed, and six-eyed octopus with small wings. Like her father, she is able to alter her body proportions at will, such as by enlarging her wings to enable her to fly. While she normally has eight arms like any octopus, she can extrude or retract additional ones at will (she has been known to sport as many as twelve arms). Each arm is equipped with dozens of razor sharp claws, each about five inches in length.

Jens's short story narrates the capture of Cthylla by researchers who mistakenly believe her to be a rare specimen of a previously undiscovered octopus species. For the sake of preserving and studying the species, they then attempt to impregnate her through artificial self-insemination.

The Great Old Ones are ancient creatures of immense power. Most are also colossal in size. They are worshipped by deranged human cults, as well as by most of the non-human races of the mythos. The Great Old Ones are currently imprisoned—a few beneath the sea, some inside the Earth, and still others in distant [[planetary system]]s (and beyond). The reason for their captivity is not known, though there are two prevailing theories: (1) They were sequestered by the [[Elder God (Cthulhu mythos)|Elder Gods]] for committing past [[wikt:transgression|transgressions]], or (2) they are sealed off somehow from the rest of the universe by their own volition.{{Rn|Harms-126}}

According to the first theory, the Great Old Ones were once members or servants of the Elder Gods. When they committed some unknown blasphemy, they were cast out and imprisoned in various places in the universe. The Great Old Ones impatiently await the time of their release, eager to seek retribution against their jailors.

The second theory holds that the Great Old Ones are intentionally [[wikt:quiescent|quiescent]]. To account for this, it is possible that the universe experiences cosmic cycles, similar to the seasons of the earth. Just as some animals [[hibernation|hibernate]] during the winter, so too must the Great Old Ones rest in death-like sleep during the present cosmic cycle.{{Rn|harms-127}} If this is so, the Great Old Ones are currently trapped by powerful cosmic forces and must remain so until such time as "the stars are right"—the event whenupon they are released and can revel once more across the cosmos{{Rn|Lovecraft-88}}.

Another theory suggests that the Great Old Ones have fallen into hibernation due to unsuitable conditions. It is also possible that they are subject to some combination of the theories previously proposed.{{Rn|Unknown-a}}
