Servitors of the Outer Gods were inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's occasional references to piping, madly-dancing attendants to Nyarlathotep and Azathoth, such as in 1923's "The Rats in the Walls (fiction)", further detailed by August Derleth in "The Lurker at the Threshold (fiction)".

Description

...Those grinning caverns of earth's centre where Nyarlathotep, the mad faceless god, howls blindly to the piping of two amorphous idiot flute-players....
H.P. Lovecraft, "The Rats in the Walls (fiction)" (1923)

Toad-like creatures which seemed constantly to be changing shape and appearance, and from whom emanated, by some means I could not distinguish, a ghastly ululation, a piping.
August Derleth, "The Lurker at the Threshold (fiction)"

The Servitors of the Outer Gods are the servants of the powerful Lesser Outer Gods that swirl, writhe, and dance endlessly before the throne of Azathoth at the center of the universe. The Servitors play the insane flute tunes and drum beats to which the Outer Gods dance. Though they have no fixed shape, they are described as looking something like a toad and an octopus. These extradimensional beings can be summoned to Earth to assist in worship and other occult ceremonies of cultists of the mythos.
